Functional Morphology: ‘Point and Shoot’ Prey Capture in Fishes
نویسنده
چکیده
The ability to protrude the jaws and capture elusive prey is a hallmark of fish evolution. New analyses provide insight into how jaw protrusion changed predator-prey relationships and fueled species diversification in ancient seas.

The integration of locomotion and prey capture in vertebrates: Morphology, behavior, and performance.
For most vertebrates, locomotion is a fundamental component of prey capture. Despite this ubiquitous link, few studies have quantified the integration of these complex systems. Several variables related to locomotor performance, including maximum speed, acceleration, deceleration, maneuverability, accuracy, and approach stability, likely influence feeding performance in vertebrates. The relativ...
متن کاملAquatic prey capture in ray-finned fishes: a century of progress and new directions.
The head of ray-finned fishes is structurally complex and is composed of numerous bony, muscular, and ligamentous elements capable of intricate movement. Nearly two centuries of research have been devoted to understanding the function of this cranial musculoskeletal system during prey capture in the dense and viscous aquatic medium. Most fishes generate some amount of inertial suction to captur...
متن کاملThe integration of locomotion and prey capture in divergent cottid fishes: functional disparity despite morphological similarity.
Many mobile animals rely on the integration of locomotion and feeding to capture prey. Fishes commonly swim up to a prey item and utilize a combination of ram and suction feeding for prey capture. Marine cottids represent a diverse and abundant lineage of fishes that exhibit variation in feeding mode that is related to their mouth morphology. However, little is known regarding the integration o...
متن کاملMorphology, Kinematics, and Dynamics: The Mechanics of Suction Feeding in Fishes.
Suction feeding is pervasive among aquatic vertebrates, and our understanding of the functional morphology and biomechanics of suction feeding has recently been advanced by combining experimental and modeling approaches. Key advances include the visualization of the patterns of flow in front of the mouth of a feeding fish, the measurement of pressure inside their mouth cavity, and the employmen...
متن کاملEcomorphology of Feeding in Coral Reef Fishes
Once an observer gets past the stunning coloration, surely no feature inspires wonder in coral reef fishes so much as their morphological diversity. From large-mouthed groupers, to beaked parrot fish, barbeled goatfish, long-snouted trumpet fish, snaggletoothed tusk fish, tube-mouthed planktivores, and fatlipped sweet lips, coral reef fishes display a dazzling array of feeding structures. And, ...
